String Vibrator

Product Code: WA-9857A

Description

The String Vibrator transforms mechanical wave demonstrations into hands-on activities that every lab group can easily perform. Featuring an elegant design with no motors or speakers, the String Vibrator allows students to study the fundamental characteristics of mechanical waves including wave speed, frequency, wavelength, amplitude, interference, and resonance.

Features

  • Two recessed clamping surfaces allow it to be secured to a table with a C-clamp
  • Built in rod clamps allow for mounting vertically or horizontally on a standard lab rod
  • Tough custom plastic case to stand up to student use

Applications

  • Standing Wave Patterns
  • Mechanical Wave Characteristics

How It Works

A neodymium magnet fastened to the stainless steel tongue is free to move within a coil. By supplying AC current to the coil, an alternating magnetic field is created which vibrates the magnet and tongue. Attached a string or elastic cord using the hole in the tongue and secure the other end to produce a waveform.

We recommend the Sine Wave Generator, Function Generator or the 550 or 850 Universal Interfaces as the source for the signal and power for the String Vibrator.
