Assessing Water Quality Parameters in a Freshwater Aquarium with PASCO Sensors

Written by: Katherine Ninos

Combining PASCO’s wireless pH, ODO, and temperature sensors, we were able to measure and record pH, oxygen, and temperature levels from a fish tank! The results allow students to learn about ideal conditions aquatic animals thrive in!

A comfortable range for fish is between 70-82 degrees Fahrenheit. the temperature recorded in SPARKvue is at 82! This tells the fish owner that the fish tank’s temperature is okay for now, but should come down soon.

Freshwater fish, like the kind in this particular fish tank, prefer the pH range to be around 6.8 to 7.8. The pH is just above 7.8, meaning it needs to be regulated as the fish tank is slightly alkaline.

The desired range for dissolved oxygen is above 7 mg per liter, and in this case the oxygen reading is just below 7. this means that the tank does not have the desired amount of oxygen freshwater fish like, so it may stress some species of fish.
