AYVA supports MyClassNeeds.ca

Many students across Canada will have a richer learning experience this year with the addition of classroom supplies that bring education out of the textbook and into curious hands.

AYVA is an Education industry supporter of MyClassNeeds.ca. The Canadian charity helps connect deserving K-12 classroom projects with interested donors through a crowdfunding website. In its first few years, it has helped teachers in publicly-funded schools purchase everything from a cooling unit to raise salmon eggs, to electric motors, to rocket supplies.

Mrs. Sekhon in Surrey, B.C. teaches children in primary classes. She knew that adding butterfly larvae would be a great addition to her class. “We have a diverse group of students who love playing outdoors and exploring nature. We have many English language learner students who have joined us recently and this is a great hands-on way to learning about nature, life cycles and basic needs of local animals, without a language barrier.”

Through MyClassNeeds.ca and supporters like AYVA, Mrs. Sekhon’s students will marvel at the transformation from larvae to butterflies this year.

AYVA at the ASEE Conference in Indianapolis

IMG_4319

In mid June, AYVA President Dianne Beveridge and Western Territory Manager, Stacey Metz attended the ASEE in Indianapolis, Indiana. This year’s theme was “360 Degrees of Engineering Education” and there were many sessions and workshops for attendees to take part in. The conference was well attended by educators and vendors from across the US and Canada.

Three of AYVA’s partners attended as exhibitors, displaying teaching equipment for a variety of engineering areas. TecQuipment, PASCO Scientific and PIGNAT were all in attendance and AYVA representatives were able to collaborate with them on new equipment and ideas to bring back to our customers to assist in reaching their educational goals.

Pictured is Stacey Metz, with PIGNAT representative Regis Rodriguez and PIGNAT’s mini distillation unit, which is similar to those that have been installed at schools across Canada.

We look forward to ASEE next year in Seattle, meeting with our partners in attendance and hope to see many of you there.

Global Education Partners Celebrate PASCO’s 50th Anniversary

50th

Four AYVA representatives along with AYVA’s President Dianne Beveridge escaped the long winter we have been experiencing here in Canada for warm and sunny Sacramento California last week. It was not all fun in the sun though.

In keeping with AYVA’s promise to offer educators resources and training support to help them excel and to help students learn, AYVA employees joined with all of PASCO’s global education partners to attend training courses on PASCO equipment. The week long course took place at PASCO Scientifics’ head office.

Our employees went back to the classroom to learn of PASCO’s new product releases.
The workshops were interactive and hands on and focussed on Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Engineering. AYVA employees enjoyed the full lab experiments with PASCO product experts on hand to help.

There was some time set aside in order to celebrate PASCO Scientifics’ 50th Anniversary including the annual Awards Dinner, and a Bar-B-Q complete with fireworks.

A cycle of free Educational Video-Conferences to discover the National Parks

The Canadian Wildlife Association and the Bateman Foundation in partnership with the Parks Canada Palisades Centre are offering a series of free educational video-conferences for students.

Four conferences available in both English and French will span over two weeks – from March 3-7 and from March 24-28 – and give the students a chance to discover the wildlife and natural diversity of Canada’s National Parks. The attendees will also be involved in several activities throughout the sessions, making it an interactive experience.

Each video-conference will be an hour long and articulate around the following themes: “Species at Risk”, “Jasper Inside and Out”, “Avalanche Safety” and “Wildlife Remote Camera”.

How to Videos from PASCO

howDoI50 Days to Celebrate 50 Years

How do I change the view of data in a graph? How do I connect wirelessly to an IPad?

If you sometimes ask yourself these questions, you should check out PASCO’s new videos!

To coincide with its 50th Anniversary, PASCO created 50 short videos in response to popular “How do I?” questions heard from customers on sensors, software, and hardware.

PASCO will release one video per day until March 11.

Fourteen of them are already available, on AYVA’s YouTube Channel.

Diamonds in the sky?

saturn

Diamonds may be a hot commodity here on Earth, but in space, they’re positively common.

Scientists have long believed in the existence of diamonds on Neptune and Uranus. Now, new research suggests the sparkly rocks may also be found on Jupiter and Saturn.

It was previously believed that these two planets were too cold to allow for the formation of diamonds, but a study conducted by Mona Delitsky of California Specialty Engineering and Kevin Baines of the University of Wisconsin-Madison suggests that the precious gem may rain down on Saturn and Jupiter.

The theory states that pressure within the planets’ atmospheres could be turning carbon into diamond. If this holds true, there could be fragments of the gem floating in the atmosphere of both planets.

As the diamonds sink lower, extreme heat could be liquefying the rocks, creating ‘diamond rain’.

Some scientists even believe there could be liquid diamond seas in our solar system.

Imagine that!

Using lightning to charge cell phones

Researchers Nokia and the University of Southampton have charged a cell phone with simulated lightning, providing a sneak peek into the future of wireless charging.

“This discovery proves that the device can be charged with a current that passes through the air, and is a huge step towards understanding a natural power like lightning and harnessing its energy,” said University of Southampton scientist Neil Palmer in a statement, adding that the lighting was able to fully charge the phone in a matter of seconds.

The research is in its early stages, so it’s not known how the technology will be used, or when it will be available to a mass market.
Check out the video to learn more about the experiment.

The above experiment was conducted in a controlled environment under the supervision of experts – so don’t try this at home.

The Learning Never Stops!

PASCO 2013 training

AYVA employees traveled to PASCO Scientifics’ Head Office in Sacramento California early in August to attend a week long training workshop.

In partnership with PASCO, AYVA employees are constantly exploring new technologies and looking for ways to make teaching more interactive. This workshop was designed to do just that. Our employees went back to the classroom to learn all of PASCO’s new product releases, updated software versions and refresher courses on popular products and experiments.

The workshops were interactive and hands on. PASCO product experts were on hand to answer any inquiries they had about the experiments.

Our recent back-to-school training has prepared us to help educators tackle the challenges presented in today’s teaching labs.

AYVA travels to the Bahamas

bahamasupdate2

The AYVA team traveled to sunny Bahamas last week. Members enthusiastically participated in team building exercises. Some exercises were completed with ease, while others posed more of a challenge both mentally and physically!

Strategies were reviewed and new ideas generated for the upcoming months. It was difficult to leave the warm weather to head home, however most were excited to get back and implement the ideas learned over the four days.
